What is a geisha?

A geisha is a woman in Japan who is trained in traditional arts such as music, dance, and conversation. The word “geisha” means “person of the arts.” Geisha wear beautiful kimonos and help keep Japan’s old traditions alive.

Geisha usually work in special areas of cities called hanamachi, which means “flower towns.” These are quiet streets with tea houses where geisha perform and entertain guests.

A very old tradition

The geisha tradition began hundreds of years ago. At first, men were the entertainers, but later women became known for their grace, music, and dancing. By the early 1900s, there were many geisha in Japan’s big cities. Today, there are fewer, but the tradition continues, especially in Kyoto.

How do you become a geisha?

Becoming a geisha takes years of hard work and training. A girl who wants to learn may join a geisha house, called an okiya, where she studies art, dance, and music. She also learns how to wear a kimono properly and how to move gracefully.

At first, she helps around the house and watches the older geisha work. Later, she begins her training as an apprentice, known as a maiko. Maiko wear colourful kimonos and special hairstyles. After several years of practice, a maiko can become a full geisha.

Life as a geisha

A geisha’s main job is to share traditional Japanese culture. She might dance to the sound of a shamisen (a three-stringed instrument), pour tea, or play games and talk politely with guests. Everything she does is done with elegance and care.

Geisha today

Today, geisha still work mainly in Kyoto and Tokyo. They perform at tea houses and festivals, keeping Japan’s old music, dances, and customs alive for new generations. Even though there are fewer geisha now, they remain an important part of Japan’s culture and history.
