From wolves to woofs
Dogs are one of the oldest animal companions humans have ever had. Thousands of years ago, people tamed wild wolves, and over time, they changed into the friendly dogs we know today.
At first, dogs helped humans hunt for food and guard camps. Later, people bred them into many different types, from tiny lap dogs to giant guard dogs. Today, there are over 340 recognised breeds of dogs around the world.
Dogs with amazing jobs
Dogs aren’t just pets, they’re workers too! Guide dogs help blind people walk safely. Police dogs can sniff out clues during investigations. Rescue dogs can even find people trapped under snow or rubble after accidents like earthquakes.
And let’s not forget sheepdogs, who expertly round up sheep, and therapy dogs, who bring comfort to people in hospitals or care homes. It’s fair to say that dogs are real-life furry superheroes.
What is International Dog Day?
International Dog Day is celebrated every year on the 26th of August. It was started in 2004 to honour all dogs, no matter their breed or background, and to encourage people to adopt dogs from shelters.
It’s also a reminder to treat dogs kindly and thank them for their loyalty. Around the world, people mark the day with dog shows, adoption events, and lots of extra cuddles for their four-legged pals.
Most popular breeds
While every dog is special, some breeds are especially loved as pets. In many countries, the Labrador Retriever is number one thanks to its friendly nature. German Shepherds are also very popular, as are small, playful breeds like French Bulldogs.
Of course, many families choose mixed-breed dogs, which can be just as loving and loyal as purebreds. The truth is, the most popular dog is always the one wagging its tail right in front of you!
