A kids’ guide to endangered species and how we can protect them

This children’s article, A kids’ guide to endangered species and how we can protect them and how we can protect them, has been written for native English speakers and learners of English as a second or foreign language. It can help children practise reading and comprehension, learn useful vocabulary, and discover why some animals are in danger and what people can do to help. Written by Sinead O’Carroll, an experienced teacher and writer.

What are endangered species?

An endangered species is an animal or plant that is at risk of disappearing forever. Scientists keep track of these species and try to protect them. If too many of one species are lost, it becomes harder for them to survive in the wild.

Why do animals become endangered?

There are many reasons why animals become endangered. One major reason is the loss of habitat. When forests are cut down, rivers are polluted, or ice melts in the Arctic, animals lose their homes.

Hunting and fishing can also reduce animal numbers, especially if it happens too often. Climate change makes things even harder by changing the weather and food supply.

Examples of endangered animals

Some well-known endangered animals include giant pandas in China, tigers in Asia, and sea turtles that swim across the world’s oceans. In Africa, elephants are endangered because of poaching, which means illegal hunting.

Even tiny creatures like certain frogs and insects are endangered too. Every species, big or small, is important for nature.

Why does it matter?

Animals and plants are part of ecosystems, which are like giant puzzles where every piece matters. If one species disappears, it can affect many others. For example, if bees were to vanish, many plants would not be pollinated, and humans would struggle to grow enough food. Protecting endangered species helps keep nature in balance.

How can people help?

Governments create national parks and laws to protect animals. Conservation groups rescue injured animals, protect habitats, and teach people about endangered species. Children can help too by learning about wildlife, using less plastic, and supporting organisations that protect animals.

Even small choices, like recycling or planting flowers for bees, make a difference when many people take part.
