Welcome to Serengeti National Park

Imagine a place where lions yawn under shady trees, giraffes stretch their long necks to reach the tallest leaves, and zebras race across long yellow grass. This is Serengeti National Park, a protected area in northern Tanzania, a country in East Africa, south of the equator with a coastline along the Indian Ocean.

Its name comes from a Maasai word meaning “endless plains,” and the park really lives up to its name, the grasslands stretch as far as the eye can see.

Meet the animals

The park is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Lions, leopards, and cheetahs are the main predators, while zebras, gazelles, and wildebeests are their prey.

Elephants march across the plains, giraffes nibble high branches, and crocodiles lurk in the rivers. Birds of all shapes and colours, as well as many insects, add even more life to this amazing ecosystem.

The Great Migration

One of the most spectacular events in the park is the Great Migration. Each year, huge herds of wildebeests, zebras, and gazelles travel together across the plains in search of fresh grass and water.

Along the way, they face challenges like crossing crocodile-filled rivers and avoiding hungry predators such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas. The animals travel almost 2,000 km.

It is one of the most extraordinary wildlife journeys in the world.
